What does the creation of life, the ancient Aztecs, and good health have in common? If you answered spirulina and chlorella then you are right. These powerful blue-green algae are related to all three. Spirulina and chlorella are not the same things but they are very similar to one another.

What Are Chlorella and Spirulina?

There are many reasons why you are here on earth and Spirulina is one of them. Spirulina is the oldest life form that produced oxygen for the first organisms that evolved on the earth. Spirulina and chlorella both are a type of blue-green algae. Spirulina grows in salty water but it best grows in freshwater whereas chlorella grows in freshwater.

How Is Chlorella and Spirulina Used?

It was only after the discovery of the microscope in the 19th century that chlorella was discovered. The harvesting process of Spirulina is much easier than chlorella because chlorella contains cell walls that limit its harvesting method.

Spirulina is grown in large ponds then passed through filters and dried and finally pressed in the form of tablets or it can also be sold as a powder. On the other hand, the cell wall of chlorella needs to be removed or cracked for its supplemental use. For this reason, chlorella has not gained as much popularity as spirulina thus far.

The chlorella also significantly decreases DNA damage.
